Australian cartoonist and poet Michael Leunig dies aged 79

Michael Leunig, the esteemed Australian cartoonist and poet, passed away on December 19, 2024, at the age of 79. He died peacefully, surrounded by his family and loved ones. 

Early Life and Education

Born in East Melbourne in June 1945, Michael Leunig was the second eldest of five children in a working-class family. He attended Footscray North Primary School and Maribyrnong High School, where he developed an early interest in art and literature. 

Career and Achievements

Leunig's career spanned over five decades, during which he became a prominent figure in Australian cartooning. His work was featured in The Age for nearly 55 years, where he gained recognition for his whimsical characters, such as Mr. Curly and his ducks, and his insightful commentary on social and political issues.

 

In 1999, he was declared an Australian Living Treasure by the National Trust of Australia, acknowledging his significant contribution to Australian culture. 

Personal Life

Leunig was married twice and had four children. He lived on a farm in north-eastern Victoria, where he continued his artistic endeavors until his passing.
